What Is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA)?

A certified public accountant (CPA) is a designation for licensed accounting professionals. The CPA. designation helps enforce professional standards in the accounting industry. In America, the CPA License is provided by the Board of Accountancy for each state. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) provides resources on obtaining the license.

Diverse Lucrative Jobs or Positions the Certified Public Accountant Program Can Offer

The Department of Accounting of the University of Buea has created rewarding career opportunities to fast-track graduates to an accounting career. In partnership with the Kenyan Accountants and Secretaries National Examination Board (KASNEB) and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya, the Department of Accounting has designed this unique professional program to produce skilled and competent professional Accountants, Auditors, Finance Managers, Tax Consultants in the public and private sectors. 



Moreover, the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) regulations state that candidates who wish to become CEMAC-accredited Public Accountants must be holders of a public accountancy diploma certification or an advanced diploma in accountancy that is recognized by competent authorities.

Becoming a Chartered Accountant in Cameroon

The Certified Public Accountant (CPA) program is taught by leading professionals. Graduates will be registered as Chartered Accountants in CEMAC and ONECCA upon fulfilling the professional experience and other requirements.

Requirements to Become a Certified Public Accountant in Cameroon (CPA) at the University of Buea

Holders of any of the following qualifications can apply to be a certified public accountant in Cameroon:

  • GCE Advanced Level Certificate (or equivalent) with at least two papers (including English and Mathematics) at the Ordinary Level.
  • KASNEB Technician, Diploma or professional examination certificate;
  • A degree from a recognized University. A degree in Accountancy and ACCA certification (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is not compulsory.
  • Any other certificate recognized by KASNEB.

How to Enroll in the Certified Public Accountant Program (CPA)?



The deadline for submission of the application is August 31. Registration is opened at the online platform of the University of Buea. Manual registration and further information can be obtained in Room 010 of the Faculty of Social and Management Science building.
