How Mobile Network Operators Fight Covid-19 in Cameroon

Mobile operators in Cameroon have been quick to show their commitment to the fight against Covid-19 by proposing various initiatives. This has been in the form of support to the Ministry of Health, awareness campaigns by SMS, implementation of safety measures in their regional agencies, unique in-call tones about Covid-19, popularisation of barrier measures on social networks, and most significantly, the launch of several promotions on their usual offers.

We shall look at the leading promotional offers and strategic actions offered by MTN, Orange, Nexttel, Camtel, and Yoomee Mobile since last March to promote barrier measures against Covid-19.

Measures Taken by MTN Cameroon for the Fight Against Covid-19

On March 19, 2020, MTN Cameroon announced its first measure to limit the spread of COVID-19. It stated the suspension of mobile money transaction costs between accounts on its network. This measure was aimed at curbing the use of cash in daily use. MTN Cameroon Foundation also launched several activities in response to the government's strategic plan. Between March and April 2020, several other promotions and initiatives related to Mobile Money and e-learning followed.

They can be summarised as follows:


  • The suspension of charges for mobile money transfers between Mtn accounts MTN (for amounts up to 20,000 FCFA and limited to 3 transactions per day) for 30 days.
  • The suspension of fees on money transfers between a bank account and a linked MoMo account with partner banks such as Ecobank, UBA, and Afriland First Bank. The offer was valid from April 1 to 30.
  • Free payment of ENEO invoices from April 1 to 30.
  • Free access to several dozen digital platforms dedicated to education (national universities, training centers, local e-learning platforms, and international platforms such as Coursera, Udemy, Wikipedia, etc.) every day from 6 am to 4pm.


Measures Taken by Orange Cameroon for the Fight Against Covid-19

The measures adopted by Orange Cameroon as part of the fight against COVID-19 mainly were presented on March 20, 2020, in a press release on social networks. These were as follows:

  • The Manufacture of Covid-19 protective masks by Orange Cameroon Foundation.
  • 100 Million FCFA of medical equipment was given to the Ministry of Public Health
  • Free of charge Payment of Water, electricity bills and sending of money via Orange Money (No limits to the amount sent)
  • 30% drop in residential internet plans
  • 50% discount on 3G and 4G internet keys
  • Free access to educational content on Orange Pulse.



Measures Taken by Nexttel Cameroon 


The main strategies taken by Nexttel Cameroon as part of the fight against COVID-19 were:

  •  Reduction of 50 F on the price of the two Night Surf packages. Nexttel Night packages (from 200F to 150 FCFA for 3 GB and from 300F to 250F for the 5GB package. Learn More here.
  • The return of the Super data package gives you 5 GB of data at 500 F.
  • The extension of the promotion on Nexttel modems: The advertisement on the Wifi Modem and Nexttel's Wifi Box is priced at 19,900F and 39,999F, respectively.
  • Extension of the "40% on the JAPAP250 offer" promo with the Voice + SMS package from Nexttel, which was reduced from 250 F to 150 F. This Nexttel bundle offers 850 F for calls, SMS to all networks, and data.
  • Distribution of Protective masks to the general population.

Measures Taken by Camtel Cameroon

  • Camtel 150 GB offer for 10,000 Fcfa: On March 23, 2020, Camtel introduced the Family Surf  150 GB promo. This aimed to persuade its subscribers to stay at home and surf the internet with their families.

In conclusion, these are some of the many promotions and measures/strategies are undertaken by Cameroonian Mobile Network Operators (ISPs). These measures and the Cameroon government's response strategies are primarily geared toward the fight against the deadly Covid-19 virus.
